2008 Policy Platform
The Forsyth County Healthy Community Coalition supports a variety of policies that will improve health in our community. For
example:
- Neighborhoods, parks, urban areas, schools, and workplaces built to encourage physical activity (including, for example, features like sidewalks, bike lanes, greenways, and well-lit parks with safe play ground or exercise equipment)
- Smoke-free policies in workplaces, schools, public buildings, and private businesses such as restaurants. These policies protect workers, students, and customers from the dangers of second-hand smoke.
- Healthy food choices being offered at reasonable prices in school lunchrooms, in local grocery stores, and at restaurants.
- Education about dating violence and safe relationships taught to all youth in the public school system.
- An effective domestic violence response system that provides victims with safe alternatives for themselves and their children.
- No-idling policies or policies that define the amount of time a vehicle should be left running while parked. Turning off cars and busses while parked prevents air pollution and will help address our community’s enormous asthma problem, especially among children.
- A minimum wage of at least $9 per hour that will allow more low-income residents to purchase health insurance, buy healthier foods, and take advantage of healthy lifestyle options.
- A standard protocol used by health care providers to help their sexually active patients prevent unplanned pregnancy.
Do you have a health policy idea that is not on our list? Let us know what your community health issue is and why you’re
passionate about it. If you have a suggestion that would address a health policy need in our community, we’d love to talk
with you.
